EDS installs Campaign Infirmaries in isolated regions of the Amazon

Since April Brazilian Health Expeditions (EDS) has led the COVID-19 Mission, a voluntary logistics operation aimed at offering better medical and hospital care in the struggle against the coronavirus. So far, EDS has installed and equipped a mobile Emergency Care unit which worked for one month providing support to a University Hospital (UNICAMP), and also led the construction of a semi intensive-care Campaign Hospital of 84 beds, being operated under the administration of Campinas’ (SP) Municipal Town Hall. Besides that, 39 new bed were installed at the Ouro Verde hospital, also based in Campinas/SP.

Parallel to the hospital’s construction, EDS began the “S.O.S People of the Forest” Mission, with the creation of Campaign Infirmaries (EC) in strategic locations which naturally serve as gathering points for the local indigenous communities, ensuring a higher rate of survival for patients suffering mild and moderate COVID-19 complications. Our goal is to decentralize outpatient treatment to decongest the influx of tribal patients into the region’s larger cities, whose limited hospitalization capacity is on the brink of collapse.

As part of this mission, EDS also sends periodical donation shipments from Campinas/SP and distributed to the aforementioned gathering points with has high numbers of patients. These shipments contain medicines, supplies, PPEs, diving masks adapted for use in Intensive Care Units, oxygen cylinders, as well as generators which are used to supply electricity to more remote tribes.

“Having set up the Campaign Hospital, we are now totally dedicated to the well-being of the indigenous peoples of the Amazon – which is EDS’ DNA. We have made several campaign infirmaries available in different cities across the North of Brazil, where the pandemic has hit hard and resources are limited.”, says the Association’s Chairman, Dr. Ricardo Affonso Ferreira.

The humanitarian aid has reached several regions, such as Alto Rio Negro, Rio Tapajós, Vale do Javari, Parque do Tumucumaque, Xavantes, Yanomami, Raposa Serra do Sol, among others, and the infirmaries have already been saving dozens of lives. However, requests for aid are ongoing, since the health service system in these regions has exceeded its care capacity and the number of infected people keeps growing every day. We expect to cover all the amazon and install up to 140 campaign infirmaries.

Transporting all the material to the North of Brazil is a hard task since we face a shortage of products and services in that region, on top of the high cost of medical supplies, air, and water transportation. In order to continue these operations which minimize the impact of the pandemic, we are looking for partners who can fund new humanitarian aid shipments, as the North of Brazil has the most alarming infection and death rates.

All of COVID-19 Mission’s operations have been solely funded with the NGO’s own resources, originated from partnerships, private donations, and socially responsible enterprises, without government assistance. EDS will not retain any moneys as remuneration or funding by virtue of our managing and execution of this project.
