OUR WORK
WHERE WE ALREADY WORK IN THE AMAZON
With more than 20 years’ experience, EDS has a history of expeditions to various states in the Brazilian Legal Amazon region.
OUR DIFFERENTIAL
The Mobile Surgical Center, a cutting-edge facility capable of adapting to the harshest conditions found in the Amazon forest, is what sets EDS apart. Remote indigenous and riverine communities now have free access to specialized medical care, primarily surgical care, thanks to this innovative social technology that volunteer engineers created in Brazil. The entire building houses the Material and Sterilization Center (CME), small procedures, general surgery, medical comfort, patient waiting areas, dressing areas, and ophthalmologic surgery rooms. It also contains the same cutting-edge, secure equipment that is available in Brazil’s major hospitals.
The Surgical Center is a part of a sizable Mobile Hospital Complex that is constructed on each expedition while taking the needs of each community into consideration. However, in order for it to operate, EDS, with the help of the Indigenous Health Secretariat, performs preliminary adequacy works, such as the installation of water tanks, cesspools, and wells, the construction of bathrooms, and the revitalization of community centers. These improvements are delivered to the communities at the conclusion of the expeditions.
Besides the Surgical Center, the Hospital Complex houses an ophthalmology ambulatory, offices for different medical and dental specialties, exam rooms, pre- and post-operative rooms, a pharmacy, an eyeglass factory, a reception and patient screening room, a kitchen, living quarters, and bathrooms, among others. Since modern mobile generators produce all of its energy, it is a self-sustaining structure that only needs to draw water from the river to function.
In its latest modernization, the Surgical Center received improvements that made transportation, assembly, and disassembly easier and faster and added concepts that minimize contamination and increase the efficiency of the surgical environment. Besides making it possible to transport it in a modular way, this drastically reduces the total weight of the cargo. This new center has greater thermal efficiency thanks to its double-layer walls and metallized external canvas, which reflect a good part of the intense heat of the equatorial region.
It is worth mentioning that all the health procedures performed in the expeditions follow the required regulations and the excellence in the quality of services provided by the EDS team.
