WHO WE ARE

Expedicionários da Saúde (EDS) is a Brazilian nonprofit health organization established in 2003 by a group of volunteer doctors.

With over two decades of experience, we have acquired the necessary expertise to provide free access to surgical healthcare for indigenous people residing in geographically isolated areas of the Amazon Forest.

HISTORY

Periodically, a group of friends, mostly doctors, would organize nature hikes. In the year 2002, during their visit to Pico da Neblina in the state of Amazonas, they had the opportunity to visit a Yanomami village.

Confronted with a reality significantly different from their own, they decided to shift the focus of their travels and try to make a difference for the indigenous population in this region. The group reached out to healthcare institutions to gain insights into their operations and thus plan for an effective involvement.

In this manner, in 2003, EDS was formally established. Since then, the initial nature hikes have transformed into medical expeditions aimed at serving indigenous communities in the Amazon, giving birth to the “Operating in the Amazon” Program.
